North Manitou Island
Learn how to backpack on our multi-day North Manitou Island expedition offering a comprehensive backcountry education experience.
North Manitou Island is known by those who frequent it to be one of the finest backpacking destinations in the Great Lakes Region. Located 13 miles from the mainland, the island remains isolated from traffic and is teaming with life. Clients will hike among massive trees, explore pristine dunes, experience spectacular sunsets and the thrill of the coyote’s howl at night. The island is rich with human history—many relics from settlements in the 1800s remain intact.
With a diverse array of flora, fauna, and terrain, North Manitou Island is arguably Michigan’s most excellent classroom for outdoor education. Individuals will discover the joy and value of being immersed in the wilderness as they backpack across the island, sometimes off-trail, and construct their camps. Backpackers will have opportunities to learn about wild edibles, the island’s history, human impacts on the ecosystem and develop the skills and confidence necessary to execute expedition-style backpacking trips.
Our experienced and certified guides will ensure you a safe, educational and enjoyable experience along the way! Origin Expeditions arranges all food and equipment. Clients must arrange for transportation to Leland and bring weather-appropriate clothing.
