Nordhouse Dunes

Learn how to backpack with our overnight Nordhouse Dunes program.

Nordhouse Dunes is a 3,450 acre Federally Designated Wilderness Area on the eastern shoreline of Lake Michigan. The highly fragile freshwater interdunal wetlands ecosystem located in Nordhouse Dunes are found nowhere else in the world and is home to a diverse array of raptors, songbirds and the endangered piping plover. Between its miles of undisturbed lakeshore, well-established trails and excellent camping opportunities, this destination is amongst the most popular backpacking locations in the State of Michigan. As a result, the abundance of human traffic threatens the integrity of the dunes.

Join us for this overnight course and learn the skills and knowledge necessary to backpack in pristine wilderness areas such as this in a practical, sustainable way. Individuals will discover the joy and value of being immersed in the wilderness as they navigate through the wilderness and construct their camps. Clients will have opportunities to learn about human impacts on the ecosystem and develop the skills and confidence necessary to plan and execute their own backpacking trips.

Our experienced and certified guides will ensure you a safe, educational and enjoyable experience along the way! Origin Expeditions arranges all food and equipment. Clients must arrange for transportation to the trailhead and bring weather-appropriate clothing.
